What is a heat pump?

Technically, a heat pump is a mechanical-compression cycle refrigeration system that can be reversed to either heat or cool a controlled space. Installation for this type of system typically consists of two parts: an indoor unit called an air handler and an outdoor unit similar to a central air conditioner, but referred to as a heat pump. A compressor circulates refrigerant that absorbs and releases heat as it travels between the indoor and outdoor units.

How does a heat pump work?

In order to know how a heat pump actually works you will need to imagine a heat transporter moving warm air from one place to another. Even if it is cold outside, which is rare for Central Florida it can extract the heat energy that is present. Hence, why it is called the heat pump. And in the blistering Florida heat, it reverses that function and becomes an AC removing heat from your home.

Heat pump not working?

A good way to tell if your heat pump needs to be serviced is if it develops frost or ice on the outdoor coils. This should not occur. If there is a build up of this ice the heat pump shifts temporarily into cooling mode and reverses the flow of refrigerant. Thus moving the hot refrigerant through the coils to defrost the system. However, if you are having issues with this you need to call an AC professional in Central Florida.

Spotting Issues Before They Get Bad

If you do not repair these issues, the unit will undergo serious damages and will eventually breakdown permanently. Things to look out for are:

  • Low refrigerant levels
  • Defrost not working
  • Bad thermostats or sensors
  • The reverse valve is sticking
  • Damaged fan motors
  • Elevation or leveling issues

Some of the other issues we see

After doing this for 20+ years we have run across a bunch of different issues. Some issues we see more than others are:

Not running at all – Sometimes the heat pump flat out doesn’t run, this could be a simple fix or a very complicated one. It could be as simple as your breaker being off, but it could also be a more sinister issue like damaged fuses, or electrical problems. We strongly advise that you do not try to fix or troubleshoot these issues yourself. You should call a professional immediately.

Heat pump short cycling – In the past we have seen this as an issue when dirt and other pieces of debris start clogging up the unit. With how windy Florida can get, it’s often the cause for these short cycles.

Frost on the outdoor unit – This is the telltale sign of a defrost cycle going off too much. You will need an HVAC specialist with sufficient training to figure out what’s causing this issue. GAP Mechanical is filled with licensed technicians with the know-how to diagnose this issue and get you up and running asap.

Heat pump not heating properly – If a heat pump is not heating properly, again, it can be a number of things. It could be a situation where the unit is not turning on when it needs to, indicating an issue inside the unit. With an internal issue, it is strongly advised that you contact a professional. Or it could be some balancing is needed, where some rooms are too cold or too hot.
